Chapter 17

ACCOMPANIED BY THE guards who had brought him to the council meeting, Esavas followed Prince Armasaweth, Commander Lansitor, and Captain Baros to another unfamiliar wing of the palace. “I apologize,” the prince said to Esavas as they walked. “I spent half the night trying to talk him out of it. I have to admit, though, he’s right. Our best chance to recapture Yaskivir Rock before the rebels can launch their invasion is to use a mage. And you’re the best one we’ve got, weather mage or otherwise.” He shook his head with a resigned sigh. “If my father hadn’t antagonized or arrested so many of the mages in the military and in service to the Crown, we might have other choices. At least he’s finally found a use for you.”

“I had no idea they were going to ask you to do this,” Captain Baros added. “When they summoned me to the meeting, I guessed it was another assignment for the Blacksnakes. I was surprised when you walked in, but then I figured it would be a diplomatic mission.”

They turned a corner into a hallway lined with doors. It appeared newer than the other parts of the palace Esavas had seen, and was far plainer. A strong smell of herbs, medicines, and sickness filled the hall. “Are we going to visit one of the survivors from Ayavora Valley?” he asked.

The prince shook his head. “No. Like I said, they’re under secure guard in another location, in case the rebellion tries to hunt them down. Even I don’t know where they are. The man I’m taking you to see will also be moved there once his physical injuries have been healed. He’s still under guard, and I ask you to not reveal his presence here. It shows how important Father thinks this is, if he’s willing to allow you near this man.”

They reached the end of the hall, where four guards bearing the king’s personal tree dragon crest stood outside a door. “The king wants Learned Master Esavas to see the patient,” Armasaweth said.

One of the guards at the door looked to the guards who had accompanied Esavas, who nodded.

“King’s orders,” said the leader of Esavas’s guards.

This man must be a person of high and sensitive value indeed, if even the crown prince’s word wasn’t enough by itself to get Esavas admitted to see him, and if what he had to say would require him to be moved to a secret location for his own protection. Esavas’s curiosity intensified even as he reminded himself that no matter what this man said, he could not change his mind.

The first guard who had spoken unlocked the door. “Orders from the king, madam,” he said into the room. Esavas and his companions, guards included, entered the room, and the first guard closed the door behind them.

Inside the room, a woman of early middle age wearing the white robes of a bi’asan physician was standing next to a sleeping mat, where a man lay sleeping or unconscious.
